Most Philippines taxi drivers are very nice and safe to ride with. Practicing our basic safety tips will ensure that you have a good experience each and every time. We have put together 12 tips that we feel should always be followed for your safety.

1. Check TaxiKick.com

Go to taxikick.com and read reviews of violators. It is a free platform to report or check on violators. Take note of the top 10 and avoid them. Anyone can make a simple report there of a problem with Philippines taxi drivers. Reports are emailed daily to LTFRB (Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board). Do your part to help others by reporting any violators with the taxi name and plate number.

2. Don’t ride without a meter!

Always request the driver to use the meter. If he refuses, then get out and take a different cab. Also make sure that the meter is reset. Never negotiate a fixed price for your fare.

3. Stay awake!

Falling asleep can put you at risk for rape or robbery. This could also allow the driver to tamper with the meter. Do your best to stay awake until you reach your final destination.

4. Always ride in the back seat

Never ride in the front next to the driver if you are alone. It is too easy for him to grab you. It is safer to ride directly behind the driver’s seat. His ability to reach you is much more difficult.

5. Text your family or friend the Cab’s info

Send a text to a loved one with the plate number, taxi name, the time and location of your pick up plus your intended destination. Be sure to send a follow-up text when you safely reach your destination. Make a call or even fake to make a call giving this info to someone when you get inside the cab. This will make all Philippines taxi drivers think twice before trying anything.

6. Stay on the main route to your destination

Don’t let the driver take any shortcuts unless you are very familiar with the new route and feel comfortable with it. Many times these shortcuts can take you through some very secluded and dangerous areas.

7. Lock the doors!

Always lock all the doors when you first enter the cab. Make sure the driver locks his as well. This precaution will make it more difficult for any harm to you from threats outside.

8. Keep the windows rolled up

It’s okay to have your window open a small amount to allow for fresh air, but not enough for someone to get a hand through and grab you.

9. Never get in a cab that has other passengers

Sometimes Philippines taxi drivers will have accomplices that pose as other passengers. You could be risking a robbery or worse.

10. Never display your money

You should never flash or show your money while in a cab. Keep your money out of the Philippines taxi drivers view. Try to have your money ready in hand to pay as you reach your destination.

11. Don’t tell too much info

Filipinos are naturally very curious about foreigners and they think nothing of asking very personal questions. Do not give the driver personal details about the nature of your trip or business. Do not discuss any money you may have or how much you make. As a foreigner, they already think you are rich, so don’t confirm it. It’s better to keep any conversation to very general subjects. If you find yourself in an uncomfortable Q & A, just pretend to be busy with texting on your phone.

12. Ask for his cell phone number

If you find a driver who you like and feel good about, ask him if you may contact him again in the future for his services. It’s always good to ride with a trusted driver. They are usually honored that you like their service and will sometimes give you even better service as a repeat customer. You may want to keep several taxi drivers numbers stored in your phone in the case that one is not available.

By following our 12 safety tips here and practicing some good common sense, you should be able to ensure your safety and avoid any potential problems. Also, be sure to read our article on how to avoid scams from Philippines taxi drivers.
